When I first started using essential oils I was worried that I was going to be an oily mess all the time. I used them on my hands and neck so I was sure that my hands and neck were going to be constantly covered in oil. The more I used them the more I realized that they were not oily at all. Why is this?
How can I use essential oils all day long and not be oily from head to toe? The fact being that essential oils are lipid attainable blends of volatile AROMATIC compounds found in plants. They are made through a low steam distillation process where the essential oils are carried away by the steam. When the steam cools, the oils and water naturally separate and the oils are then collected. If I put a drop of essential oil in my hand and let it sit, I would notice that it would absorb and disappear into the skin after a few minutes or so. The oils of essential oils should not be compared to the consistency of fatty oils like canola, vegetable, or olive oil. Essential oils are pure and will work through your body in a safe and healthy manner. Wherefore, they wont congest anything in your body. If you place a drop of fatty oil in your hand, well, get used to it because it isn't going anywhere.
If you happen to receive an essential oil and you notice that it is oily after use, then you probably don't have a true, pure essential oil. Here is a good way to test for a pure essential oil (I did this test myself to make sure mine were pure):
- Take a piece of plain white printer paper
- Place a drop of essential oil on it
- Let it dry
- If there is not ring around the drop after it has dried (the drop should completely disappear after it has dried), then it is pure!
- If there is a ring, or a big space of oil that isn't drying, I would consider trying a different brand.
Now that you know your oils are pure lets start using them to the fullest! Here are a few tips on how you can use them:
Aromatically- An essential oil can be used by breathing in the aromatic essence of the oils. You can do this by placing a drop or two in your hand and cupping your hands over your nose and mouth. You can also use essential oils by diffusing them in your home with a diffuser. I love diffusing oils in the morning. It's a great way to start my day!
Topically- An essential oil can be used directly on the skin. Some are easily diluted and absorbed into the skin with a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil. When I used oils directly on the skin, especially with my little child, I dilute it with a carrier oil.
Internally (Note: only pure essential oils should be taken internally, if the brand encourages you not to use them internally, then that can be another red flag that they are probably not pure)- An essential oil can be taken internally through veggie capsules or some may be taken with water. I like to start my day with a drop of lemon essential oil in my water. A great boost of "get-up-and-go"!
